At our 80th anniversary" Pioneering Nurses In The Changing Health Care Environment" we honored five previous presidents of the Mary Mahoney Nurses.
1988-1990 Rosa Lee Brown. Graduate from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, Ilinois. BA and MA from the University of Detroit in 1975-1976. A prolific writer and member of the Famous Writers group, Ms. Brown had several articles submitted to Readers Digest.
1990-1992 Georgia V. Currie. Graduate of L. Dillard University (Birmingham, Alabama) in 1950. She received her BA in 1976 and a MA Ed in 1978 from the University of Michigan. She was the first black oncology nurse at the Darling Center Foundation.
1992-1994 Flora E. M. Leonard. Graduate from Wayne County Community College, she received her BSN from the University of Detroit-Mercy. MSN from the University of Phoenix. She became a faculty member at UOP in 1997.
1994-1996 Willie Mae Suggs. Graduate of Grady Hospital School of Nursing( Atlanta, Georgia) in 1945. She was one of the first black nurses at Receiving Hospital. She was also the first black nurse to serve as a volunteer for Project Health-O-Rama.

Olivian DeSouza, president of Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses, offers the following resolution:
A resolution recognizing Willie Mae Suggs by renaming our Mary Mahoney nursing scholarship to the "Willie Mae Suggs"nursing scholarship.
Whereas, Mary Mahoney (1845-1926) was America's first Black Professional nurse, graduating in 1879 at the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston; and
Whereas, Willie Mae Suggs, a graduate of the Grady Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta (1941); and
Whereas, Willie Mae Suggs was one of the oldest member of the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses (1941); and
Whereas, Willie Mae Suggs was a past president (1994-1996) and Secretary (1941-1943) and Treasurer (1988-1990) and chair of the Travel committee (1990-1992); and
Whereas, Willie Mae Suggs was a pioneer and trailblazer in nursing as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, and as a nurse at Detroit Receiving Hospital for thirty years and as an organizer of the Health -O-Rama (Project Healthy Living) and volunteer with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, therefore be it
Resolved by the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses, That the members recognize and support the name change to the Willie Mae Suggs - Mary Mahoney Nursing Scholarship and be it further
Resolved, That Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses urge its members to solicit funds to support the Willie Mae Suggs-Mary Mahoney nursing scholarship and be it further
Resolved, That the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses send copies of this resolution to Michigan Nurses Association, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., Black Nurses Association, local colleges/universities and those other deemed appropriate by its officers and members.
